A neck pillow can provide long lasting relief for many ailments and they are becoming increasingly popular among consumers. But, searching for a good one can be very confusing and overwhelming as there are many different types available. To add to the confusion many are the same thing but go by different names. For example, a neck pillow can also be known as a chiropractic neck pillow or a cervical neck pillow. Also, there may be different types that use the same material and are then lumped together as one. How do you tell the differences between the various neck pillows available on the market? Here is a quick rundown listing the description and main characteristics of each.
Memory Foam Neck Pillow
This is the most common style available and it is probably the one that most people are familiar with. They may also be known as a Tempur-Pedic Neck Pillow, as Tempur-Pedic was the first company to produce them. Another common name is contour neck pillows. These pillows are characterized by their unique space age material (it was developed by NASA), which remembers and conforms to the shape of anything placed on it.
Travel Neck Pillow
As their name implies these pillows are used while traveling. They are generally smaller in size than a standard pillow and U-shaped so they fit around your neck. They are available in many different types of materials and are designed to let you sleep while sitting up by supporting your head and not allowing it to fall forward and thus give you a neck ache. There are even kid or toddler travel neck pillows available. Great for those long car trips!
Neck Roll Pillow
This type of pillow is also called a cervical roll pillow, or if it is shaped like a dog bone, a dog bone pillow. These pillows are shaped like a log or dog bone and can be placed under the neck to support the cervical structures. They can be used alone or some of them can be placed inside the bottom edge of the pillowcase of a standard pillow. Some people also like to use these as a travel pillow. These are also available in many different types of materials.
Inflatable Neck Pillow
This type of pillow is nice because it can be inflated to whatever size is most comfortable for the user. They come in many different types of shapes, sizes and materials. This type of neck pillow is handy for traveling as they can be deflated so that they do not take up much space in your travel bag.
Buckwheat Neck Pillow
These pillows are fast becoming popular, as they are great for people who have allergies to feathers, synthetic foam or fibers. They are actually filled with buckwheat hulls, which are not nuts, but a fruit related to rhubarb. These hulls conform to your head and neck and allow air to circulate, keeping the pillow nice and cool. This type of neck pillow has been used for centuries in the Far East.
While this is not a comprehensive list it should help you distinguish between the many different types of neck pillows available on the market.
